Geography

Kavasseri is a rural gram panchayat area in the Alathur taluk of Palakkad, located in central Kerala near the famous Palakkad Gap.

Geography of Kavasseri

  • Kavasseri consists mainly of two villages: Kavasseri-I and Kavasseri-II.
  • The region lies in the eastern midland plains of Kerala, with a mix of:
    • paddy fields,
    • coconut groves,
    • small hills,
    • canals and irrigation areas.
  • It is influenced strongly by the nearby Palakkad Gap, a natural mountain pass in the Western Ghats that allows dry winds from Tamil Nadu to enter Kerala. This makes Palakkad district hotter and drier than much of Kerala.
  • Kavasseri-I covers about 15.15 sq km of geographical area.
  • The villages are located:
    • around 4–8 km from Alathur, and
    • roughly 28–33 km from Palakkad town

Climate

  • Tropical climate with:
    • hot summers,
    • monsoon rains from June–September,
    • relatively lower humidity compared to coastal Kerala.
  • Agriculture depends heavily on monsoon rainfall and irrigation.

Natural Features

  • Fertile alluvial soil supports:
    • rice cultivation,
    • banana farming,
    • coconut,
    • vegetable farming.
  • The landscape is mostly flat to gently undulating, typical of the Palakkad plains.

Cultural Geography

Kavasseri is also known for the famous Kavassery Pooram festival, especially its daytime fireworks (“pakal vedikettu”), which attracts visitors from across Kerala.
